Instagram isn’t really made for links, or for the written word, but this post is about a link to written words.
We, as a species, are on the cusp of adopting a major change to our lived experience. It will happen gradually and incrementally, but when it’s complete, we will be more of a collective organism than individuals, and our minds will work differently than we work today.
The world’s largest tech companies are spending billions each on realizing their versions of augmented reality (aka AR, XR, spatial computing, etc), and whether you think you will or not, you are going to use some form of the tech in the future.
You and I and even the employees of those companies currently have no control over the options we’ll be given when these systems become available, and while the utility will be irresistible, the compromises will likely be corrosive to our psyches, our economy, and our society.
I believe there could be a way to learn from our mistakes - with fossil fuels, with the internet, with the built environment, our education system, and with smartphones - a way to build an augmented reality ‘web’ that reflects our values and builds towards the society we want to live in.
